Where is Barra de Navidad?

Barra de Navidad is in the state of Jalisco on Mexico’s west coast. Located about 2-1/2 hours South of Puerto Vallarta, Barra de Navidad is less than half an hour by taxi from the Manzanillo airport, or, as we like to say, 26 minutes, if we stop for beer (and we ALWAYS stop for beer!)

Situated on the Bahia de Navidad, across the bay from the town of Melaque, Barra de Navidad – or “The Bar of Christmas” – is a fishing village of aproximately 3,000 people that swells to 6,000 inhabitants in the high season (typically October – April), filling with tourists – both Mexican and “gringo” – and snowbirds who migrate south for the winter.

Located on a large sandbar, the town was inhabited and known as Barra de Navidad as early as 1542, when Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos left Barra de Navidad with a fleet of 6 ships and 400 men. It has been continually occupied since then.

Where can I eat?

Restaurants are abundant in Barra de Navidad, ranging from simple (and delicious!) taco stands to elegant Italian fare with extensive wine lists, all the while retaining the quaint air of a small Mexican town. With dozens upon dozens of options, one could eat in a different restaurant every day for weeks without seeing the same restaurant twice.

As a fishing town, Barra de Navidad has an abundance of seafood establishments, with many local dishes and some North American and European influences as well. From fish tacos or shrimp ceviche to Durango, Juachinango, Tuna, Octopus, Marlin, Oysters and more, Barra de Navidad is a seafood lovers delight. Fishing tours are also readily booked at a number of venues throughout town.

So come share some tequila or a cerveza or two and see what Mexico is really all about in Barra de Navidad on the sunny West Coast of Beautiful Mexico.

What to Expect There?

A temperate climate, friendly locals and the slow pace of a small resort town makes Barra de Navidad a welcome change for those who are tired of the frenetic pace of larger and busier resort towns, such as Puerto Vallarta and Cancun.

Whether its a stroll along the Malecon or the beach to Melaque, or an evening out on the town, Barra de Navidad has all of the amenities that attract Canadians and Americans to Mexico – beaches, restaurants, shops, surfing and tours, without the busy traffic constant stream of timeshare salesmen that come with most large tourist towns.
